Here's a great idea to make for Canada Day - especially if you will be watching fireworks in the rain - or even just a great item to have for a rainy day or to shade the kids from the sun !

YOU WILL NEED

Flat, expandable sponges OR Maple Leaf Shaped Sponges ( If you can't find maple leaf shaped sponges you can use a maple leaf shaped cookie cutter to cut out a shape from the dry sponge, then add water to make it bigger - ring it out before using )
Permanent Black Marking Pen
Scissors
Newspaper
Fabric Paint Pens ( Red / black / white - depending on the color of umbrella )
Plain umbrella ( you can sometimes pick these up at local dollar stores )

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cover your work surface with newspaper.  Squeeze paint onto your maple leaf sponge.  Spread the paint evenly over the sponge ( use a piece of scrap sponge ).  Open the umbrella.  Hold the sponge by its sides and press it onto the fabric.  Hold your other hand underneath to add pressure.  Fill the umbrella with lots of maple leafs - or you could use letter shaped sponges and spell out ' Happy Canada Day '.
